Starfish Gourmet & Wines, housed within our market, stocks an unparalleled assortment of fine wines, spirits and beers and specialty cheeses and hors d’oeuvres.

Frank Laverde – Managing Director. Frank has an extensive knowledge of the grocery and food service industries having worked in the business for most of his career. He spent much of his career with the Star Market Company, a well-known supermarket chain with over 150 stores in the New England area. Working his way up, he served in a variety of positions, including Store Manager, District Manager, Director, Vice President, and Executive Vice President. Venturing out on his own, Frank later owned three supermarkets, including Laverde’s Market on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus, which he later sold in 2006. In 1996, he started a partnership in a food brokerage business and also consulted for supermarkets and restaurants. Frank started with Starfish Market in 1997 as a consultant to help bring the highest quality supermarket to the island of St. John. He currently oversees the daily operations of Starfish Market and Starfish Gourmet & Wines from the corporate office in Stoneham, MA. In addition to Frank’s grocery experience he also has broad experience in real estate, partnering in a home building business and an underground utility business in addition to holding his real estate brokerage license.

Joe Alicandro – Operations. With 38 years of experience in the supermarket industry, Joe has a vast knowledge in all facets of the grocery business including store operations, sales, budgeting, expense controls, customer service, asset protection and associate development. He joined Starfish Market in 2012 and works directly with the Starfish Market management team to improve store operations, increase sales, reduce expenses and ensures a great customer experience. Joe began his career in the industry as a management trainee with Stop & Shop and that experience allowed him to eventually become assistant Store Manager, Store Manager, Manager of Operations Support, District Director, VP of Asset Protection and VP of Operations before joining Starfish Market. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree of  Business Administration and Management from Northeastern University and was an executive board member on the Mass Food Association’s Board of Directors.


Starfish Market continues to support the community, by providing jobs to over 55 employees and by sponsoring and hosting many St. John events. We have a long tradition of supporting our local schools, civic organizations, veterans and senior citizens programs and are proud to be an active community sponsor.
