Starfish Market
“The Quality Leader”
Starfish Market – Our Story
Starfish Market was founded in 1995 by Boston-based businessman and philanthropist David Mugar. After falling in love with St John, David recognized an opportunity to bring fresh meats, produce, and a wide grocery selection to the island.
The Mugar family has deep roots in the grocery business. In 1916, David’s grandfather pooled all the family’s money together and bought a small market
outside Boston for $900. They named it “Star Market.” David’s father Stephen Mugar grew Star Market into a 35-store juggernaut known for the highest quality products. As a nod to the family legacy, David named the St. John store “Starfish Market”.
The first Starfish Market opened in Cruz Bay in March 1996 and soon became a go-to for customers and a vibrant establishment in the community. David could occasionally be seen stocking shelves, working the deli counter, or bagging groceries. Customers fell in love with the market.
In response to customer demand, David called upon architect Glen Speer and the Bertolino and Swan families of St. John Hardware to design and construct a new home for Starfish Market. Thus, in the summer of 2000, The bMarketplace was born.
Starfish Market now occupies over 12,000 square feet, showcasing produce, meats, frozen foods, deli, groceries, liquor, and bakery goods. The store has become the lifeblood of the island, serving tourists and locals alike, while enjoying its distinction as one of St. John’s largest employers.
In 2022, David Mugar passed away. His legacy and contributions to St. John live on through his family who remain committed to ensuring that Starfish Market remain a first class, best in class destination for all visitors and residents to the island of St John.
